Peak Performance competes in 2013 USATF Southern Association Championships

Peak Performance Track Club participated in the 2013 USATF Southern Association Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships at Bernie Moore Stadium on the campus of LSU this past weekend, June 22-23.  PPTC had 39 athletes who participated in the meet which had 40 teams representing over 980 athletes in attendance from Mississippi and Louisiana. 26 of the 39 qualified for the USATF Region 6 Championship Meet to be held in Natchez, MS on July 4-7 which will include athletes from Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Peak Performance Director and Coach, Dennis Groll, states "For a first year team, we competed on the big stage (980 athletes, 40 teams) as though we were an experienced team. We had a lot of PR's at last week’s meet indicating that our training is on target and we are blessed to have very competitive athletes who believe in themselves and their training." The club won 26 medals, 11-Gold, 10-Silver, 5-Bronze. Athletes had to finish in the top 5 to move on to the regional meet.

There were many great performances and the following is a recap:

  • Tripp Marcus (Boys 13-14 yr. old Division) Qualified in three events by winning all three events. He won the Shot Put  (39-3 1/40 the Discus (128-8) and Javelin (150-3). He had PR's in the Shot Put and Discus and just missed a PR in the Javelin.
  • Javion Lee (Men's 17-18 yr. old Division) qualified in and won two events, the Long Jump and Triple Jump. He had a big PR in the Triple Jump.  He improved from 47-9 jump to a 49-1/4, skipping the 48 foot barrier.
  • Kennedi Sanders ( 9-10 yr, old Division) qualified in two events. She won the 200 Meter Dash  in 28.24 and finished second in the 100 Meter Dash in 13.67.
  • Juston Waters (Men's 17-18 yr. old Division) finished 3rd in the 400 Meter Dash with a near PR of 49.58 after a tough week of football practice. His time indicates that he is adjusting to the additional training load between football and track.
  • Asia Poe qualified in 3 events with PR's in two events - the Long  Jump (16-71/4) and the Triple Jump (34-0). She was on pace to a big PR in the 200 Meter Hurdles when she took a bad fall. She got up and was able to fight back and finish in 5th and qualify to live for another day with a chance to PR at the Region 6 Meet. She will also compete in the Pentathlon, a new event for her. The Pentathlon is a five event competition consisting of the 100 Meter Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump and the 800 Meter Run.
